At the New Mexico Student Parent Alliance, we believe in the power of collaboration. Our partners play a crucial role in helping us support parents striving for higher education while raising young children.
The New Mexico Student Parent Alliance advocates for policies that support student parents and their families in New Mexico’s higher education system. We work with legislators, institutions, and community partners to advance legislation that removes barriers, improves access to resources, and ensures that parenting students can thrive academically and personally.
Senate Memorial 16 — Data on Parenting Students in Higher Education

Senate Memorial 16 requests the Higher Education Department to convene a task force to study, develop recommendations for, and draft legislation for collecting data on parenting students in New Mexico’s higher education system. In 2024, one in three New Mexico college students were parents or expecting — yet there are currently no standardized methods for identifying parenting students or their barriers to success. The task force will include representatives from four-year institutions, community colleges, tribal colleges, parenting students, and a representative from the New Mexico Student Parent Alliance. The task force will present its report and recommendations to legislative interim committees by November 1, 2026.
